Anatomy of a Scandal: Russell Heim’s Descent
Russell and Elizabeth Heim moved into 2368 W. Lake of the Isles in 1939, but divorced in 1948. Heim, then Hennepin County Coroner, remarried the following year to a woman more than 30 years his junior. In 1952 he was charged in federal court with illegally obtaining narcotics for resale, 229 counts in all. The sensational trial ended in guilty verdicts across the board, though he received only a four-year sentence. The judge cited Heim’s age and the disgrace he had already brought upon himself for the reduced sentence. A reporter noted that he was “no longer the smiling, almost jaunty figure he had seemed… during his trial.” He served 17 months, much of it in a prison medical center, before his sentence was commuted. His health declined afterward, and he died in 1960. For more on Russell Heim’s self-destruction: https://www.mnhs.org/mnopedia/search/index/event/downfall-russell-heim-1947-1952

2368 W Lake of the Isles Is Leased to the Traers
In 1933 Gerald and Jessalyn Martin split up, and for that year Jessalyn appeared as the sole homeowner of 2368 W Lake of the Isles. From 1934 to 1936, the Minneapolis City Directory listed the property simply as “vacant,” though in late 1934 it was reported that the home had been rented to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn W. Traer. By the end of that year they no longer needed to lease the house. The couple had purchased the Locust Hills Country Club and converted it into their own country estate.

A Home for Christmas
In August of 1915 Gerald R. Martin, then secretary of the Brooks (grain) Elevator company, announced his plans to construct a house at 2368 West Lake of the Isles Boulevard. A cost estimate at the time of planning was $7,000, but that was before the pipe organ was factored in. Perhaps the house was being built to appease Mrs. Jessalyn Martin, whom he had married in 1914. He had a hobby of racing speed boats, and a particularly dangerous accident occurred one month before the announcement. A clue may be that there is a lack of articles about Mr. Martin's speed boat racing after that mishap; or maybe he just decided that the sport was too dangerous.
