The Mercury

Overview J. Paul Getty fulfilled his dream to create a landmark building at the corner of Wilshire and Western with this twenty-two-story tower, which faces (and dwarfs) the iconic Wiltern Theatre and Pellissier Building. The building's vertical columns of white marble and glass, architect Claud Beelman's signature statement of Los Angeles corporate modernism, aptly expressed the stolid and stalwart sensibilities of the industries the tower housed. When the building opened, Union Bank was the primary tenant; later, Getty Oil Company made the building its headquarters. After sitting mostly vacant for over a decade, the building was converted into condominiums and reopened as The Mercury in 2007. Photo courtesy of LA Wad on Flickr
