No 1940 Census Records
Due to the addition of more apartments in the house, the house numbers would also have shifted. The owner Darwin Martin and his company, Buffalo Phoenix Company, had trouble renting the house out as well, leading to a lack of information on the year 1940.

No Records of 1930 Census
No census records exist for 1930 because of the legal battle between Darwin Martin and the owners of the house, John Bastear and Alva Thomas, when they failed to repay their loans. Renters of the house would have had to leave when the legal battle was done.

Studio Addition + Addresses
Although the Frank Lloyd Wright Home (428 Forest Ave) and Studio (951 Chicago Ave) have separate addresses, they are part of the same historic property in Oak Park, Illinois. The two structures are physically connected and were designed to function together—Wright lived in the home and worked in the adjacent studio. The studio, which faces a different street, was added in 1898 and assigned its own address due to its separate entrance and street-facing frontage. A covered corridor linked the two buildings, allowing for private passage between Wright’s personal and professional spaces. Notably, the corridor was originally built around a pre-existing tree—an intentional design choice that reflects Wright’s philosophy of harmonizing architecture with nature. The tree has since been replaced, but the corridor still stands today and remains part of the visitor experience. Though the home and studio hold different addresses, they functioned as a unified complex during Wright’s life and are preserved today as one cohesive site by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust.
