National Register of Historic Places - Frederick E. DuToit House

Statement of Significance: The Frederick E. DuToit House is significant due to its association with the second generation of one of Chaska's leading families. Since 1855 the DuToit family has been involved with, and to a significant degree responsible for, Chaska's commercial growth. In 1866 Frederick E. DuToit purchased the Chaska Herald from Charles A. Warner. Warner first published this newspaper in 1862. At the time of its sale to DuToit, Warner noted that the paper had been published a greater length of time without interruption than any other paper issued in the county. The Chaska Herald was published by the DuToit family for over one hundred years. In addition to publishing the county's oldest continuously operating newspaper, Frederick E. DuToit was active in state and local politics. He was a representative in the legislature in 1872-3, and a state senator, 1899-1909 This well-preserved house has continuously been occupied by the DuToit family. Julianne DuToit Smith, granddaughter of Frederick E, DuToit, has preserved the house and a number of significant personal effects once owned by her grandfather.
